After two months on the road, I’ve learned that eating healthy and staying fit while traveling in an RV can be a unique kind of challenge! When we first set off, I envisioned perfectly balanced meals and daily workouts with the dumbbells we packed. We were going to take on this adventure and be awesome.
But with ever-changing locations, cold weather, and limited space, reality had other plans.
Small Steps to Healthy Eating
At first, I struggled to stick to a routine and found myself grabbing whatever was easy. I stopped tracking my macros because of the limited ability to fully stock my small fridge with the foods I was used to and because it felt too difficult.
But I soon realized I needed to stop waiting for “perfect” conditions. Instead, I could focus on small, manageable changes to keep me on track.
Here's what I did:
- Stocking Simple Staples: I started making sure I was keeping my healthy eating staples stocked in the RV, including bananas and protein powder for smoothies, apples for snacks, and Greek yogurt for quick yogurt bowls. This made grabbing something healthy easier.
- Committing To Specific Meals: While we've been on the road, we've all enjoyed getting out on the town and trying new restaurants, particularly for dinner. To combat the extra calories and unplanned dinners, I started having my regular, planned breakfasts and lunches. Every morning, I started having my protein with water, eggs, and fruit. Every lunch, I started having a protein shake. I also stopped having a daily snack, knowing I would be eating enough at dinner. This ensured I would get enough protein in and not overdo it too much with total calories.
- Committing To Home-Cooked Meals: To balance the dining out, I cooked two home-cooked, nourishing meals each week to help bring some normalcy and balance. This allowed us to enjoy our regular meals and provided leftovers for lunches for the kids throughout the week.
These little steps have made a big difference. It’s a great reminder that health doesn’t have to be all or nothing. Small actions add up, and each step towards the person you want to be gets you closer to achieving your goals.
Getting Back to Fitness
When we started our new adventure, Dustin and I planned to work out regularly with the dumbbells we brought along. I packed our weight bench along with a set of 5s, 15s, 35s, and 50-pound dumbbells and various fitness bands. But in colder spots where it's been dark and 40 or 50 degrees in the morning, the thought of heading outside to exercise wasn’t so appealing.
For a couple of weeks, Dustin and I chose to sleep in instead of getting up to exercise. I knew it wasn't the best choice for us, but I couldn't figure out how to make it all work.
Then, I realized my exercise wasn't all or nothing. Even though we were still figuring out the strength training piece, we could still get a walk in every morning. So, we set our alarms for 45 minutes earlier and started walking 1-2 miles each morning. Getting outside and prioritizing our fitness felt great. We continued to do this for another few weeks, and I've now hit at least 8,000 steps for over a month now, which makes me very happy.
Now that we handled the walking, it was time to figure out the strength training. I found an Anytime Fitness nearby, and we decided to join. I wasn't happy spending the money on a gym membership when I had left my amazing home gym in Austin and even planned ahead with my dumbbells in the RV, but that clearly wasn't working.
The membership has been a game-changer. Knowing we can find an Anytime Fitness almost anywhere we travel has helped us recommit, and now we’re working out nearly every day. We’re feeling so much more ourselves, which is a great feeling.
I share all of that to say this: If you’re working toward healthier habits but feel overwhelmed and like you're not doing enough, remember that each small step counts. Whether it’s taking a walk, grabbing a healthy snack, or hitting the gym when you can, every action is a step in the right direction—and that’s something to celebrate.
Here’s to taking it one step at a time and finding balance, no matter where we are!
