Hey, Cleanish Squad!
I recorded this email for you! Click to listen.
I used to eat without thinking—grabbing something quick between work and kids, picking at whatever snacks were in the house, tasting dinner as I cooked, or “treating myself” after a long day. I never really stopped to ask if I was actually hungry or just running on autopilot.
I had no idea how often I was eating just out of habit, stress, or because I didn’t have a plan—not because I was actually hungry.
What finally helped was something super simple—I started asking myself a few questions before I ate. It might not seem like much, but it made me slow down, get more intentional, and actually start eating in a way that alligned with the results I wanted.
#1: Am I actually hungry… or just bored, stressed, tired, or looking for a distraction?
It’s wild how often we reach for food just out of habit. Stressful day? Grab a snack. Kids are overwhelming? Head to the pantry. Mindlessly scrolling? Something sounds good.
Asking this question makes me pause and check in. Sometimes I really do need food—but other times, I just need a break, a glass of water, a breath, or to step away from my phone for a minute.
#2 Will this meal keep me full and satisfied for a few hours?
One of the biggest shifts in my fat loss journey was realizing I wasn’t eating enough to actually feel full. I’d grab a bar or snack on some crackers, and then be starving an hour later. I didn’t understand what foods would actually keep me satisfied.
Now I build my meals around protein, fiber, healthy fats, and volume—so I’m not standing in the pantry 20 minutes later wondering what else I can eat.
I actually shared a full breakdown of what I eat in a day last week—and honestly, I couldn’t be happier with how much food it is. It’s satisfying, energizing, and still supports my goals.
This one question has helped so many of my clients break that all-or-nothing cycle. Sometimes, the real fix isn’t eating less—it’s eating enough of the right things.
#3 Does this support the version of me I’m trying to become?
This one’s really about identity. It’s not about guilt—it’s about alignment.
When I think about who I’m becoming—someone strong, focused, and energized—I want my choices to line up with that. That doesn’t mean I eat perfectly. But it does mean I’m making intentional choices, not just reacting out of habit or emotion.
Sometimes I have the treat. Sometimes I pass. The difference is, I’m deciding, not defaulting.
